Sky TV arrived at the Dental Academy at Daresbury on Wednesday (7th March, 2007) this week to witness the fitting of gum shields to the Warrington Wolves Rugby League first team players’.
The filming is scheduled to appear on Sky Sports tonight (Friday, 9th March, 2007 from 7.30 pm) in the build-up to the coverage of the Warrington versus St Helens SuperLeague XII game.
Following an interview with Vinnie Anderson about the St Helens game (whilst he sat in the dentist chair) Angela Powers, Sky Sports Reporter, asked him had he ever had any problems with damage to his teeth. He explained that; in Australia it was compulsory to wear mouth-guards whilst playing rugby. Rugby league is such a physical sport and there are big risks. When Angela asked what he thought about the archetypal prop forward with missing teeth. Vinnie replied; “If that’s a look they want then don’t wear gum shields, but that look is not for me”.
As part of the Dental Academy’s Warrington Wolves sponsorship the gum shields are being supplied to the Warrington Wolves team together with on-going dental care if they get injured during a game whilst wearing their shields. .
As sponsors of Paul Cullen, the Warrington Wolves Coach, the Dental Academy want to encourage the wearing of gum shields to all those playing a contact sport. Who better to act as ambassadors than the local Rugby League team?
The gum shields, which carry the Warrington Wolves colours and logo, are produced by SmileGuard (the world’s largest supplier of mouth guards).
Kevin Dobbs, Dental Surgeon, at the Dental Academy, said: “The shields we are offering the players are custom fitted making them more comfortable for players to wear throughout the game. Mouth guards are the best way of protecting teeth whilst playing tough contact sports. They act by absorbing energy from any blow and reduce the chance of costly treatment, painful injury and additional treatment. We hope that younger players in schools and clubs will follow the example of their local professional team and protect their smile.”
The Dental Academy offers a wide range of high quality dental care, combining the latest techniques with outstanding professional standards for both patients and dental professionals.
